Bereavement Committee
Our Bereavement Committee is made up of kind and compassionate volunteers who are here to assist those planning a funeral. They provide solace and comfort to those suffering the loss of a loved one and ensure that the reception following a funeral is taken care of. This Corporal Works of Mercy focused committee is truly a vital part of our parish when it comes to hosting funerals.
Services provided:
-Communicate with family to set up details of the reception
-Provide food/drinks as needed per the committee coordinator
-Assist in serving all beverages and food to mourners on the day
-Assist in set-up and clean-up of the reception
-Of course provide a sympathetic ear to any who may need one on the day
Facts for joining:
-We welcome both men and women to join our group!
-Due to the last minute nature of funerals, we do not expect all of our volunteers to be able to assist at every funeral reception
-In most cases, there is usually a 3-day prior notice for funerals so please do not feel pressured to volunteer if you are not able
Our Bereavement Committee is always looking for new members. If you are a good listener with a caring heart and a couple of good recipes in your arsenal, then this would be the committee for you! For more information or to sign up, please contact the head of our committee, Grace Bay, at bereavement@stcindependence.org.
Healing Ministry
We are a group of faithful people that the Holy Spirit brought together to pray for the peace and health of our fellow Christians. With so much suffering in this world, this is an important ministry. Each of us knows someone who is fighting a life threatening illness or a family dealing with drug addiction or divorce. There are also many who are out of work or disabled and struggling, mentally or physically. It is with this in mind that we meet once a month to pray and give support to one another.
We meet the second Wednesday of every month in the undercroft at 7:00 pm. During these meetings we pray, share faith experiences, learn how to experience a deeper, more meaningful prayer life, and also learn how to be more aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives.
In addition, we conduct the Healing Service. This is on the first Tuesday of each month in the church from 6:45 am – 8:15 pm. For more information or if you would like to join the Healing Ministry, please contact Mary Jo Stahl at maryjostahl@hotmail.com or 859-282-1050.
Healing Service
There are numerous places in the Bible that instruct us to pray for each other and our needs. Many miracles took place in the Bible through the prayers of others. That is what this healing service is ALL about! We invite all to come and bring others with you who are in need of prayers. Join us in praying with them. Or come by yourself and ask us to pray for anyone needing prayers, lifting them up to God’s grace and mercy.
This is a unique service in the Diocese. No other parish is constructed in this way.
We gather every first Tuesday at the church during the Exposition of the Eucharist from 6:45 am – 8:15pm. During that time, we pray with everyone that comes to the service. We have 2 groups of 3 people near the altar for individuals who ask for prayers for physical, emotional, or spiritual problems. This small group listens to the person and then prays with them. This is entirely confidential and kept private from others hearing what is said in church. This normally takes only a matter of a few minutes. While this is happening there are others in pews that pray in support of those needing prayers. There is also Penance available.
You do not need to let anyone know prior to the service that you want to participate in being prayed with.
Please prayerfully consider joining the Healing Ministry and/or coming to the Healing Service to ask for prayers. Contact Mary Jo Stahl for more information about joining the Ministry at maryjostahl@hotmail.com or 859-282-1050.
If you know of someone dealing with an illness or cancer or addiction or even out of work. Please join us here at St. Cecilia’s healing service on Tuesday evening, May 14th at 7:00pm. We need to come together as the body of Christ and pray for each other, just as the bible encourages us to do. Prayer is a powerful way to bring believers together and relieves our anxieties as we turn to God. God Bless!
Men’s Prayer Group/Brigade
Our group is for men of all ages who are on a pilgrimage together to know and love God, while striving to become the men He has called us to be. Our meetings are also a time of fellowship, as we discuss our faith and strategize about how to live out our vocation as Catholic Christian men. We are dedicated to strengthening, enriching, and supporting strong Catholic men in their lives of faith. Join us as we do battle for our faith and for our families.
Our group meets biweekly in an informal setting in the party room at Larosa’s in Independence.

St. Vincent de Paul
SVDP Mission Statement:
A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.” The most important part of our mission is to provide hope to those in need.
SVDP Meetings:
We meet as a team on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (usually for about an hour). We also meet for side projects such as working in our food pantry and replenishing it when we need to. When the holiday season approaches, we tend to meet a little more often in order to work on projects such as the Giving Tree.
During a typical scheduled Tuesday meeting, we open with prayers and share our prayer intentions. Then a Spiritual reading/meditation is presented with discussion, followed by the reading of one of the SVDP Rules.
The meeting then consists of the following:
- Last month’s minutes and treasury reports are approved.
- The previous month’s Home Visitation Report is given and followed by discussions/suggestions.
- The President reports on district meetings/news/upcoming events
- Food Pantry report is given/reviewed.
- Vice President – Sales Force report follows next. (Sales Force is the computer program that each conference uses to track our case work and hours worked)
- We discuss past cases and encourage each other in trends/how to make decisions /what next steps might be for our current or future cases
- We recognize team members’ birthdays (sometimes with snacks) or milestones such as retirement or anniversaries.
- New Business is brought up and
- We adjourn the meeting with a closing prayer
SVDP Types of Volunteers:
Volunteers are the life force behind the operations of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We must continually recruit volunteers to fulfill our mission of helping our neighbors in need. We welcome adults as well as teens. It’s a great way for students to fulfill service hour requirements. Everyone has something to offer, and you are invited to join us with whatever time and God-given talents you wish to donate. (A guardian must accompany any volunteer under the age of 18.)
Our Vincentian volunteers visit the homes of those needing help to offer spiritual, emotional, and material assistance. In-home visits offer personalized care to determine the extent of the need, the validity of the request, and develop a plan to move toward stability. One of our goals is early intervention with the hope of preventing homelessness for our clients.
You can volunteer to be in a rotation of home visits monthly, to work in our Food Pantry, sorting and organizing donations, working on the yearly projects such as the Turkeyfoot trot, coat drive or Christmas Giving Tree.

Women of the Holy Spirit/Women’s Prayer Group
Are you looking to find a way to grow your faith? Gather with like minded women to learn how to grow in your faith and protect your families from todays’ culture against God.
Our Mission Statement:
This group is spiritual direction for women of all ages. To teach women how to be the first line of defense against evil in their home and to protect their families. Also, to grow in spiritual direction. To learn a deeper way to pray and how to hear God’s voice. After all, the saints in heaven did mental prayer in order to grow closer with our Lord.
Every month we build on spiritual direction and growing closer to God. After each topic we will get together socially in order to build friendships and support each other. After all, we are creating an army for God. Each month covers a different topic, so you can start or come any month that works for you.
